NEW LEADERS TEXAS ENDORSES SENATOR WENDY DAVIS

After hearing from members across Texas, we are pleased to announce that New Leaders Texas is endorsing Senator Wendy Davis in her campaign to continue to represent Senate District 10. This race is one of the most hotly contested and critical races of this cycle.

Wendy is a strong voice for hardworking Texans because she understands their struggles firsthand. A single mother before the age of 19 - living in a trailer park and working full time - Wendy was able to go to community community college because of grant funding from the State of Texas. From there, she won a scholarship to TCU and then to Harvard Law School before serving on the Fort Worth city council. In 2008, she defeated an entrenched incumbent to win a seat in the Texas senate.

For Texas’ children, women, seniors and students, the 2011 legislative session was the worst in a generation. Senator Davis took to the Senate floor to filibuster the terrible budget and though she stood alone, she made history by standing up for all Texans. As the 12th vote in the Texas Senate, Senator Davis a crucial blocking vote on all sorts of legislation. As bad as the last session was, it would have been much worse if Senator Davis had not been there.

The decision to endorse Senator Davis was based on feedback from New Leaders across the state. The mandate from the New Leaders was clear: we must stand with Senator Davis and ensure that she is re-elected.

NEW LEADERS TEXAS WELCOMES EMILY MCCANN TO THE BOARD

New Leaders Texas is pleased to welcome Dallas resident Emily McCann to our Board of Directors.

Emily is a 2008 graduate of the University of North Texas School of Public Administration and Community Service. She was recently selected to attend Annie’s List Campaign School where she gained crucial skills to elect progressive candidates to the Texas Legislature. She is currently the Deputy Field Director for the Wendy Davis For Texas Senate Campaign (SD 10). She is a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan.

"Since her introduction to New Leaders, Emily impressed the Board with her dedication and enthusiasm. Emily was an integral part of our work in helping elect El Paso’s Mary González," said Board President Brian Stansbury. "We are thrilled to add her to our leadership team."

Emily takes the place of outgoing Dallas board member Russell Langley. Mr. Langely will continue to serve New Leaders as a valued member.

Emily joins the board at an exciting time. During this cycle, New Leaders endorsed in two key state races, El Paso’s Mary González for HD 75 and Houston’s Ann Johnson for HD 134, both fierce advocates for civil rights for all Texans. González won her Democratic Primary, and facing no November challenger, becomes the first openly gay Latina in the Texas House. New Leaders Texas co-hosted the Texas Democratic Party’s State Convention Keynote After Party with Mayor Julián Castro and Representative Joaquín Castro, in which Brian Stansbury demanded marriage equality in Texas. The following day, marriage equality was added to the TDP platform. These are the first steps to achieving our long-term goal of changing the face of Texas leadership.

New Leaders Headed to the State House (April 23, 2012

NEW LEADERS HEADED TO THE STATE HOUSE

The New Leaders Texas PAC  (“NLT PAC”) is proud to announce the endorsements of Mary González for State Representative in El Paso’s HD 75 and Ann Johnson for State Representative in Houston’s HD 134.

Each candidate endorsed by NLT PAC meets the list of criteria adopted by the board and presented to members in 2011, including an embodiment of our New Leaders Texas Principles, a viable campaign able to raise money, and a professional campaign committed to winning.

Ms. González is running for an open seat being vacated by a four-term Democratic representative. González has worked at the National Hispanic Institute, the Texas House of Representatives, and as an Assistant Dean for Multicultural Affairs and a professor at Southwestern University. Ms. González is the national president of the service sorority Kappa Delta Chi and has been recognized by Latino Leaders Magazine for her leadership in education. She is also a leader in the Texas LGBT community and a staunch advocate for civil rights for all Texans. As the oldest of eleven children raised on a Texas farm, Ms. González knows responsibility and perseverance. Polling and fundraising numbers show Ms. González as the primary frontrunner, but Ms. González is not letting up and is campaigning at full speed into the May primary.

Ms. Johnson is an attorney and educator who previously served as Harris County Assistant District Attorney. Ms. Johnson recently made statewide headlines for winning a landmark case before the Texas Supreme Court, which led to the enforcement of state laws to fight human trafficking and protect child victims of prostitution. Ms. Johnson’s career has been defined by advocating on behalf of those who cannot stand up for themselves, and she knows that justice can only be achieved through hard work and perseverance. Ms. Johnson, a cancer survivor, knows first hand the hardship of being given a potentially fatal diagnosis, and she recognizes the added burden that the millions of Texans without insurance face, when they lack the means to pay for the costs of care. Houstonians will find an advocate in Ms. Johnson and a much needed change from her Republican opponent who recently voted to cut billions of dollars from women’s health care and public education.

"Mary González will win her crowded primary in this Democratic district and Ann Johnson will defeat her Republican incumbent opponent, whose voting record does not reflect the views of her district," said Brian Stansbury, President of the Board of the NLT PAC. "Two New Leaders are headed to the State House, and we are very excited to help them fight for all Texans."

Mary González and Ann Johnson are the first candidates endorsed by NLT PAC. This year, NLT PAC will support candidates for the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, as well as candidates seeking municipal and county offices.

2012: NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEW ENDORSEMENTS

New Leaders Texas PAC (“NLT PAC”) is pleased to announce an active 2012 election cycle, including the hire of a new executive director and future candidate endorsements for the November 6, 2012, general election

NLT PAC began in 2010 as the New Leaders for Bill White Initiative, designed to target Texans in their 20s through 40s, many of whom had never participated in statewide politics before. Some were Democrats, some Republicans. All wanted new leadership in our state. During the course of the 2010 election, the New Leaders Initiative raised more than $330,000.

In 2011, NLT PAC hosted redistricting and legislative briefings featuring Gerry Hebert, lead attorney for the Texas Justice Fund, and State Representative Rafael Anchía. Simultaneously, the New Leaders Texas Foundation, which is supported by the PAC, created “Off the Record”, a statewide leadership series featuring accomplished individuals including former Houston Mayor and Texas gubernatorial candidate Bill White, Senator Kirk Watson, and Texas Tribune Editor-in-Chief Evan Smith.

“2011 saw the transition of the New Leaders network from a group of diverse and dynamic Texans supporting one candidate into a stand-alone political action committee that will support numerous candidates across the state,” said Brian Stansbury, President of the Board of the NLT PAC. “In 2012, the NLT PAC will play an active role in a number of key races throughout Texas, and our efforts in the 2012 cycle will be the first step to achieving our long-term goal of changing the face of Texas leadership.”

The executive board welcomes new Finance Chair Matteson Ellis of Austin. Mr. Ellis as an international anti-corruption law and compliance expert and founder of Matteson Ellis Law, PLLC, a boutique anti-corruption law firm with global reach throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

NLT PAC has hired Tarrant County native Kathleen Thompson as its new executive director. Ms. Thompson, a wife and mother of two young boys, is a former candidate for Grapevine City Council, a former president of the Mid-Cities Democrats PAC, and the current Tarrant County Democratic Party Communications Director. Ms. Thompson brings years of political organizing and media experience to the job.

This year, NLT PAC will support candidates for the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, as well as candidates seeking municipal and county offices. NLT PAC believes that twenty years of stagnant, single-party rule will only be overcome by supporting and cultivating the next generation of leaders.
